Preserving the History of the Sparta Neighborhood in Ossining, NY
The Week that Won the War
The True Story of the Firing on The Vulture
Char Weigel, (at left with Jug Tavern Board members) VP of Special Projects for Revolutionary Westchester 250, Westchester County’s non-profit working to encourage and amplify commemoration of the upcoming Semiquincentennial, presented The Week that Won the War after Jug Tavern’s Annual Meeting in early May.
Her presentation, based on new primary source research published in the Fall 2025, tracks the movement of The Vulture from her arrival in Haverstraw Bay on September 17 until her retreat — a week involving privileged “white flag” communications, missed meetings, and an illegal false flag offense by Americans. The dramatic seven days ended with American success given the persistence of a largely unheralded officer who secured the critical King’s Ferry crossing.
Protecting Hope
Ossining Village Historian Joyce Sharrock Cole discovered and researched the story of Sparta resident Captain Lewis Brady. On June 7, 2025 she changed the lives of the Brady family descendants by sharing the Captain's story of resilience, freedom and community, right here in Sparta where it all happened. Below are links to the ABC news coverage by Quentin Tice and a video that tells the story of Capt. Lewis Brady.
